Memory Signal

《Memory Signal》은 도시 공간과 개인 기억의 상호작용을 탐구하는 동시에 이미지의 외연을 확장하는 일종의 사진 실험이다. '사진측량기법(Photogrammetry)'으로 얻은 데이터를 '포인트 클라우드(point cloud)'로 재구성하여 생성한 도시 이미지는 눈에 보이지 않는 시간과 공간을 초월한 기억의 조각들을 포착한다. 공중을 부유하는 먼지처럼 미세한 픽셀 조각들의 집합은 숨겨져 있던 도시의 다층적인 층위를 드러내며, 각각의 점은 도시의 역사와 개인적 경험 사이의 복잡한 상호작용을 시각적으로 은유한다. 또한 픽셀 사이사이를 채우는 암부는 보는 이의 기억을 불러일으킬 수 있는 일종의 '보이드(Void)'이자 진공상태로, 빈틈없이 채워진 도시 이미지를 환기하며 빈 공간에 관람자가 자신만의 경험과 기억을 투영하여 지역에 대한 저마다의 시각을 채워 넣을 수 있는 여백으로 남겨두었다.

《Memory Signal》 is a photographic experiment that explores the interaction between urban spaces and personal memories while expanding the boundaries of image. Urban images, created by reconstructing data obtained through photogrammetry into a point cloud, capture fragments of memory that transcend invisible time and space. The collection of tiny pixel fragments, floating like dust in the air, reveals the multi-layered strata of the hidden city. Each point visually metaphorizes the complex interaction between urban history and personal experience. Moreover, the shadows filling the spaces between the pixels act as a kind of void that can evoke the viewer's memory, reminiscent of a vacuum. This void allows the densely filled urban image to be ventilated, leaving empty spaces where viewers can project their own experiences and memories, thus filling the region with their perspectives.

디지털 기술을 통해 재구성된 이 공간들은 새로운 시각적 경험을 제공하며, 건축물에 대한 기억을 재생산한다. 《Memory Signal》은 결국 단순한 이미지를 넘어 기억과 공간, 그리고 시간의 흐름을 탐구하는 여정이다. 한 장소의 디지털변환 과정을 통해 눈에 보이는 순간을 포착하는 사진을 넘어 시간과 공간의 좌표를 가늠해 볼 수 있는 '사진적 지도'를 구현하고자 했다. 실체를 알 수 없는 기억이 하나의 이야기로 재구성되어 전해지는 것처럼, 도시를 구성하는 건축물과 도로 역시 편의상 삭제하고 생성되는 물리적 환경에 그치지 않고 우리의 삶과 이야기를 담는 그릇이 될 수 있다는 사실을 함께 곱씹어보기를 권한다.

These spaces, reconstructed through digital technology, offer a new visual experience and reproduce memories of architecture. 《Memory Signal》 ultimately transcends simple images, embarking on a journey to explore memory, space, and the flow of time. Through the digital transformation process of a place, it aims to implement a photographic map that goes beyond capturing visible moments to gauging the coordinates of time and space. Just as unknown memories are reconstructed into a narrative and passed on, the buildings and roads that make up the city are not merely physical environments created for convenience and subsequently erased, but vessels that contain our lives and stories. This invites reflection on this profound reality.
